April 12,2014: As District staff work to fully incorporate the posting of the monthly Board agenda, and all other public documents for that meeting, we'll be consolidating as many individual documents into a single document, that we can. In this month's Agenda the scanned document we've posted is actually 26 pages long. By doing this, it should eliminate the need for you to search all over the web site for the documents that will be in use at that particular meeting. You're then able to print as much or as little of the information as you wish.
March 24, 2014: The South Kern Cemetery District, District Manager Danny Brown and Trustees Chandra Meade and Farrell Neeley have just returned from attending the 56th Annual Conference of the California Association of Public Cemeteries, held in Oxnard, CA. The conference ran from March 20 - March 22, 2014. During the course of the conference, more than 100 District Managers and Trustees were in attendance from throughout California. Attendees were treated to plenary sessions and breakout sessions focused on changes in existing California cemetery law, adoption of new California cemetery laws, Financial Issues Affecting Public Cemeteries, Water Conservation in Cemeteries, Trustees Duties & Responsibilities, Trustee's Ethics Training, Vector Control Issues at California Cemeteries, as well as a refresher (with updates) on California Public Meeting regulations. It was a very informative conference with numerous opportunities to meet with vendors, association lawyers, and to network with peers at other cemetery districts in California. There will be updates from the attendees, to the entire SKCD Board of Trustees, at the April 15th meeting.

March 1, 2014: Yesterday we posted a 3-page list of our fees for the various services offered by the South Kern Cemetery District. These pages can be accessed by clicking on the 'Fees/Services' tab up above, and then following the instructions once you reach that page. This information covers 3 pages, and even then, there may still be questions that have to be asked and answered regarding items or activities not listed. We suggest that you first read through the price list, jot down any questions you have, then call our office at 661-845-2540 to get an answer. If it's a simple question, we can probably handle it over the phone. If it's a more complex question, you can make an appointment to drop by and we can discuss it at length. In either case, we're here to serve the people of the South Kern Cemetery District, and to see that all of your questions receive a prompt, accurate, and courteous answer.

They can be found under our 'Public Documents' tab under 'Agenda Support Documents'. Upon advice of counsel we asked all parties who wished to offer their notes of that meeting to do so at the August meeting, in order that the best recreation possible would come out. These were then painstakingly compared for over five hours by the Board Secretary, Chandra Meade, with the official audio of that meeting. These minutes will be reviewed for acceptance during the Tuesday, September 17th regular monthly Board meeting.

August 16, 2013: The agenda for the South Kern Cemetery District's Board of Trustees meeting has been posted for the regular meeting set for Tuesday, August 20, 2013. August 9, 2013: Only items that have been properly agendized on the official posted agenda, as either new business or old business, can have action taken on them by the Board of Trustees during a South Kern Cemetery District Board of Trustees meeting. In rare instances certain items can be heard and dealt with on an 'emergency' basis. But simply because an issue is important to the person raising it, doesn't necessarily mean it rises to the level of an 'emergency' or is in need of emergency action. Items that come up during the 'public comments' portions (there are two) of the meeting can be heard, but legally no action can be taken at that time. If you wish for the Board of Trustees to consider taking action on an item, please request that the item be placed on the agenda as 'new business'. These kinds of requests for issues to be placed on the next agenda, can be made during the public comments section, or need to be phoned, emailed, or handed in to the district office as soon as possible, but no later than noon on the Wednesday immediately preceding the next board meeting. This allows for inclusion on the agenda and assures that the item has been properly posted, thereby adhering to all legal requirements for public posting, prior to the next Trustee's meeting.
August 1, 2013: We have begun formatting and uploading the information on all the burials that have taken place at the Arvin Cemetery since it opened. Initially it looks like we'll have first and last names, middle names or initials, and the date of the burial. At some future date, we hope we can compile other information like birthplace, date of birth, date of death, GPS coordinates of the grave, and a photo of the headstone. If you are computer literate and interested in volunteering some time to see this project completed, give us a call at the District Office at 661-845-2540. The first page for the surnames beginning in the letter 'A' was done by one of our volunteers and he said it took about three hours to make the necessary transfers, formatting, and pagination. Some pages would take more time and some would take less. Volunteers would need to be MS Word and MS Excel literate and have the necessary computer, MS Office software, and Internet access to exchange files with the office.
July 31, 2013:
By the end of the year we hope to have all of the burials that have taken
place at the Arvin Cemetery of The South Kern Cemetery District up on this
website under the Burials tab.
Please check back each week this month so you can be among the first to view
them. We hope that this will make it easier for friends and family,
whether near or far away, to access the information. In time we plan
to get pictures of each headstone, and GPS coordinates as well, so that it's
easier for folks who are not regulars to the cemetery to easily find their
loved one's final resting place.
Over the coming months, we will load additional 'identifiers' into the 'background of the software' of the site so that the major search engines (e.g., Google, Yahoo, Lycos, WebCrawler, Hotbot, AltaVista, etc.) will begin to pick up the information with their bots, so that when friends and descendants search for their deceased friends, relatives, and ancestors, the names will be readily accessible throughout the Internet. From personal experience, I can say that it is a moving thing to search for the grave of a Great-Grandparent here on the Internet and then suddenly to find yourself 'standing at the foot of their grave'.

Neeley also promised to donate the required software and teach the office staff how to make necessary changes to the site, as well as routine updates. Over the next few weeks you can expect to begin to see more current information (e.g., Cemetery Policies & Procedures, Costs for services the District offers, Board agendas, Approved minutes, District financial reports, etc.) posted here for the public to view. Future plans call for our being able to list all past burials, names of the deceased with a GPS location, and as time permits, pictures of the individual graves.
